Azobe Round Logs

Azobe Round Logs – the “green steel” of Central African rainforests

Azobe is one of the heaviest and hardest commercial African hardwoods, with dark reddish-brown heartwood, pale sapwood and a very coarse, solid texture. Thanh Lam Wood supplies Azobe in round logs and sawn timber, air-dried or kiln-dried to export standards, specifically for heavy-duty projects.

Thanks to its exceptional natural durability – highly resistant to termites, fungi, decay, moisture and harsh weather – Azobe is ideal for ports, bridges, marine structures, railway sleepers, industrial floors and outdoor decking, where extreme load-bearing capacity and long service life with minimal maintenance are required.

Product description

Azobe Round Logs – The “Green Steel” of Central African Rainforests – Thanh Lam Wood

Origin
Azobe is a natural African hardwood, distributed mainly in West and Central African countries such as Congo, Cameroon, Gabon… On the international market, Azobe is commonly supplied as round logs and sawn timber, either air-dried or kiln-dried to export standards, serving heavy load–bearing construction projects.

1. Wood Characteristics

Appearance & Color
Azobe has dark brown to nearly black bark, with deep reddish-brown heartwood and much lighter sapwood, creating a strong visual contrast. The texture is coarse, and the grain is usually straight or slightly interlocked; once processed, the surface feels very dense and “rock solid”.

Physical & Mechanical Properties
Azobe is one of the heaviest and hardest commercial timbers, with an air-dry density of about 0.90–1.15 g/cm³. It has exceptionally high natural durability, strongly resistant to termites, insects, fungi, decay and humid environments, and performs very well under harsh weather and direct water exposure.

Because of this, Azobe is particularly suitable for heavy-duty, outdoor and marine structures. However, its extreme hardness makes it difficult to machine, requiring specialized, sharp tooling and proper techniques to avoid chipping, burning or rapid tool wear.

2. Main Applications

Thanks to its outstanding physical properties, Azobe is mainly used in:

Heavy-duty and marine works: Jetties, piers, harbor structures, driven piles and load-bearing elements in direct or near contact with water.

Transport infrastructure: Railway sleepers, beams, industrial flooring and other high-load structural components.

Exterior and landscape applications: Outdoor decking, steps, platforms, fences, garden structures, benches and outdoor furniture.

Its very long service life and low maintenance requirements make Azobe a preferred choice for projects that demand maximum durability and minimal lifecycle cost.
