Iroko Round Logs – A Sustainable Outdoor Timber Solution from Africa – Thanh Lam Wood
Origin
Iroko is a natural African hardwood, found mainly in Congo, Nigeria, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). In the global market, Iroko is typically supplied as square-edged sawn timber, either air-dried or kiln-dried to export standards.
1. Wood Characteristics
The heartwood of Iroko is yellow when freshly sawn, then gradually deepens to a rich copper-brown over time, creating a warm, elegant and naturally aged appearance. This color transformation makes Iroko an excellent choice for projects that value a natural look and the “maturity” of real wood.
Iroko has very high natural durability, withstands outdoor weather well and is highly resistant to decay, making it one of the most cost-effective alternatives to more expensive outdoor hardwoods. The wood tends to splinter and blunt tools if cutting edges are not sharp enough, so proper tooling and machining techniques are essential to avoid chipping or cracking during processing.
2. Main Applications
Thanks to its mechanical strength and excellent outdoor performance, Iroko is used in a wide range of applications:
Exterior structures and finishes: doors, frames, sun-shade louvers and exterior detailing
Flooring & cladding: indoor flooring, outdoor decking, truck flooring and container flooring
Boatbuilding & marine works: deck planks, paneling and non-ground-contact structural components
High-end furniture & cabinetry: tables, chairs, cabinets, kitchen units and interior elements requiring durability and attractive color
Veneer & interior decoration: face and core veneers, wall and ceiling panels, decorative partitions, handrails and stair components
Joinery & decorative woodwork: turned items, light joinery, laminated components and technical wood parts
A key advantage is that Iroko used outdoors does not require frequent maintenance with oil or varnish to remain durable and stable. This is why Iroko is highly favored for exterior works and long-lasting projects where both performance and low maintenance are essential.
