Tali Timber – The “Backbone” Timber for Heavy-Duty Structures & High-End Interiors – Thanh Lam Wood
Origin
Tali round logs are a premium African hardwood sourced from tropical forests in Central and West Africa, mainly in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Cameroon, Gabon and Nigeria. On the international market, Tali is commonly traded as round logs and sawn timber, serving flooring mills, structural applications, interiors and outdoor projects.
1. Wood Characteristics
Appearance & Color
In round-log form, Tali features:
Bark: Grayish-brown to dark brown, fairly thick and tightly bonded, protecting the heartwood during handling and storage.
Heartwood: Golden brown to deep reddish-brown, uniformly colored; it darkens over time, giving a mature, luxurious “aged wood” look.
Sapwood: Lighter in color, with a relatively narrow band clearly differentiated from the heartwood.
Grain: Generally straight or slightly interlocked, with a relatively fine texture; when sawn and finished, the surface feels dense, solid and substantial – ideal for applications requiring a “solid hardwood” feel.
Overall, Tali offers a warm golden-to-reddish-brown tone, suitable for structural works, flooring and interiors with a natural and durable aesthetic.
Physical & Mechanical Properties
Tali belongs to the group of heavy, hard hardwoods, with:
Air-dry density: Approximately 0.85–1.0 g/cm³, giving a very solid, heavy feel.
Hardness & strength: Very high, ideal for load-bearing structures, high-wear surfaces and high-traffic areas.
Natural durability: Excellent resistance to termites, fungi and decay, especially effective in outdoor or humid environments.
Dimensional stability: When properly dried and processed, Tali is stable, with low warping and shrinkage, meeting the requirements of demanding export markets.
Because Tali is very hard and heavy, sawing from round logs requires powerful equipment, sharp blades and appropriate machining parameters to ensure clean cuts and reduce tool wear.
2. Main Applications
From Tali round logs, after sawing, drying and processing, a wide range of high-technical and high-end products can be produced, including:
Heavy construction & structural works: Beams, posts, frames, load-bearing components and long-life structural elements.
Flooring & outdoor use: Interior flooring, exterior decking, balconies, steps and thresholds.
Doors & interiors: Solid wood doors, door frames, handrails, stair components, tables, chairs and interior details requiring strength and durability.
Infrastructure projects: In some markets, Tali is used for railway sleepers, wooden bridges and near-ground structures thanks to its excellent load-bearing capacity and decay resistance.
With its combination of hardness, durability and attractive color, Tali is regarded as one of the “backbone” species for projects and products that must deliver both technical performance and visual appeal.
