Product description

Bosse Timber – African “Red Mahogany” for Premium Furniture & Veneer – Thanh Lam Wood

Origin
Round Bosse logs (commercial name Bosse, Guarea cedrata, African Cedar) are a natural tropical hardwood sourced from the rainforests of West and Central Africa, mainly in countries such as Congo, Gabon, Cameroon and Ivory Coast. On the international market, Bosse is widely traded as round logs and sawn timber, serving veneer production, furniture manufacturing and both interior and exterior decorative applications.

1. Wood Characteristics

Appearance & Colour

In round-log form, Bosse has:

Bark: Grey-brown to reddish-brown, relatively smooth surface with medium thickness.

Heartwood: Pale red to reddish-brown, sometimes with a slight orange hue. Once finished, it shows a warm, elegant tone that is easy to recognize.

Sapwood: Lighter in colour, yellowish or pale pink, distinguishable from the heartwood but without overly sharp contrast.

Grain: Generally straight or slightly interlocked, with fine texture. After planing, sanding and finishing, the surface feels smooth and refined.

Some Bosse logs also have a mild cedar-like fragrance, giving a pleasant “noble wood” impression during processing.

Thanks to its warm reddish-brown tone, fine grain and natural sheen, Bosse is very well-suited to high-end furniture and veneer applications.

Physical Properties

Bosse is a medium to moderately heavy hardwood, with:

Strength & hardness: Adequate for furniture, light structural elements and interior components.

Dimensional stability: When properly kiln-dried and conditioned, Bosse exhibits low warping and checking, making it suitable for boards, veneer and interior parts requiring dimensional stability.

Biological durability: Moderate to fairly good, suitable for interior use or covered exterior areas; for fully exposed outdoor use, surface protection is recommended.

Workability: Bosse is easy to saw, plane, mould, turn and slice into veneer. It finishes well and takes coatings, oils and varnishes very nicely – a big advantage for furniture factories and veneer mills.

Overall, Bosse is not as extremely heavy as species like Azobe or Pachy; instead, it sits in the sweet spot for premium interior and veneer applications, combining good workability with an attractive appearance.

2. Main Applications

From round Bosse logs, after sawing and proper processing, manufacturers can produce a wide range of products:

High-end furniture: Tables, chairs, cabinets, shelves, tops, doors and decorative details that leverage its elegant reddish-brown colour and fine grain.

Bosse veneer: Used as face and backing veneer for high-grade plywood, engineered wood furniture, kitchen cabinets, wall panels and architectural joinery.

Interior decoration: Wall and ceiling cladding, mouldings, partitions, handrails and other décor elements where a smooth surface and warm wood tone are desired.

Light structural & domestic joinery: Frames, trusses and general joinery components for interior applications, as well as household wooden items.

With its warm tone that pairs well with many design styles, Bosse is a very “safe but refined” choice for residential projects, hotels, offices, showrooms and other premium interior spaces.
