Product description

Padouk Timber – A premium, sustainable red hardwood from Africa – Thanh Lam Wood

Origin
Padouk is a natural African hardwood, found mainly in Congo, Nigeria, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). On the international market, Padouk is commonly supplied as sawn timber, veneer, flooring and blanks for furniture and handicrafts, all to export standards.

1. Wood characteristics

African Padouk (Pterocarpus soyauxii), also known as African Redwood, is distinguished by its heartwood color ranging from light pinkish orange to deep reddish brown. Over time, it gradually darkens to a rich, deep red-brown tone, adding depth and luxury to finished surfaces. The sapwood is noticeably lighter, creating a natural color transition that works beautifully in high-end interior and decorative designs.

In terms of physical properties, Padouk is a moderately heavy, hard and strong wood with very good dimensional stability. When properly dried and processed, it shows minimal warping or movement. It is rated durable to very durable, with excellent resistance to decay, fungi, termites and other insects, making it suitable for both interior use and demanding applications.

Padouk is also considered relatively easy to work: it can be sawn, planed, turned, sanded, moulded, glued and sliced into veneer with the right tooling. After finishing with lacquer, oil or varnish, the grain and color stand out beautifully, creating a strong visual impact and highlighting the “premium hardwood” character of the product.

2. Main applications

Thanks to its striking color, high mechanical strength and excellent stability, Padouk is widely used in:

High-end furniture: tables, chairs, cabinets, shelving, tabletops and feature interior elements where aesthetics are a priority.

Flooring & stair components: interior flooring, stair treads and handrails that require both durability and a standout appearance.

Veneer & decorative cladding: face and backing veneers, wall and ceiling panels, premium decorative boards and architectural panels.

Craft & technical products: turned items, boxes, decorative accessories, tool handles and components that demand high hardness and strength.

Musical instruments & signature pieces: selected for certain instrument parts and “statement” wood items that rely on its unique red tone.

With its distinctive red–orange beauty, exceptional durability and excellent finishing qualities, Padouk is an ideal choice for premium projects in furniture, interiors and architectural detailing, where long-term performance, strong visual identity and differentiated value are all essential.
