Product description

Sipo Timber – African Mahogany for Premium Furniture & Veneer
Thanh Lam Wood

Origin
Round Sipo logs (scientific name Entandrophragma utile, commonly known as African Mahogany / African Cherry) come from tropical rainforests in West and Central Africa, mainly in countries such as Congo, Cameroon, Gabon, and Ivory Coast. On the international market, Sipo is traded as round logs and sawn timber, serving primarily high-end furniture, veneer, and architectural decoration.

1. Wood characteristics

Appearance & colour

In log form, Sipo has:

Bark: Gray-brown to reddish-brown, medium thickness with slight longitudinal cracking, providing good protection for the heartwood during transport.

Heartwood: Pinkish-brown to reddish-brown; darkens and “matures” over time, very similar to other mahogany/gụ species, giving a warm and luxurious look.

Sapwood: Lighter in colour, pale yellow or light pink; moderately wide band, clearly distinguishable from the heartwood but without harsh contrast.

Grain: Typically straight and fine, sometimes slightly interlocked, giving a very smooth and uniform surface after finishing – ideal for applications where appearance is critical, such as furniture and veneer.

Overall, round Sipo logs present a warm pink-brown to reddish-brown tone with fine grain, easy to use in many mid- to high-end interior styles.

Physical properties

Sipo is a medium to moderately heavy hardwood with the following characteristics:

Strength & load-bearing: Good hardness and strength, suitable for interior components, light structures, and long-lasting joinery.

Stability: When properly kiln-dried and processed, Sipo shows low warping and cracking, making it ideal for doors, cabinet fronts, tabletops, and veneer.

Biological durability: Moderate to fairly good resistance to insects and fungal attack in indoor conditions or covered exterior applications.

Workability: Easy to saw, plane, mill, mould, and slice for veneer. After sanding and finishing, the surface is very attractive and takes stain and coatings well, making it a “go-to” material for high-end furniture and veneer factories.

In short, Sipo offers a very balanced combination of aesthetics, durability, and machinability, which is why it is widely favoured by mills and workshops.

2. Main applications

From round Sipo logs, after sawing, drying, and grading, the wood can be processed into a wide range of products for premium interior and decorative use, including:

Solid wood furniture: Tables, chairs, cabinets, shelving, tabletops, beds, handrails, and other solid interior components.

Doors & frames: Solid wood doors, door frames, casings, and cabinet fronts, taking advantage of the warm pink- to red-brown colour.

Flooring & staircases: Indoor flooring, stair treads, handrails, skirting boards for high-end projects.

Sipo veneer: Used as face/back veneer for plywood, kitchen cabinets, panels, wall cladding, ceiling panels, and other premium engineered-wood interiors.

Interior cladding & décor: Wall panelling, feature walls, mouldings, decorative trims where a smooth surface and warm wood tone are desired.

With an appearance close to mahogany/gụ but at a more economical cost, Sipo is a very cost-effective choice within the high-end interior hardwood segment.
