Azobe Timber

Azobe Timber is one of the heaviest and hardest African hardwoods, often referred to as the “green steel” of tropical forests. Thanh Lam Wood supplies Azobe in multiple forms – round logs, sawn timber and container shipments – with dimensions customized to customer requirements.

Azobe has a deep dark reddish-brown color, very dense grain and exceptional mechanical strength, with outstanding resistance to water, heavy loads and harsh weather conditions. It is virtually impervious to termites and decay.

Thanks to these superior properties, Azobe is particularly suitable for heavy-duty infrastructure such as ports, jetties, railway sleepers, outdoor decking and other applications that demand long service life and high structural safety.

Product description

Azobe Timber – The “Green Steel” of Central African Rainforests – Thanh Lam Wood

Origin: Azobe is a premium African hardwood, widely distributed across West and Central African countries such as Congo, Cameroon and Gabon. On the international market, Azobe is typically supplied as round logs and sawn timber, either air-dried or kiln-dried to export standards, serving heavy-duty structural applications.

1. Wood characteristics

Appearance & colour:
Azobe wood features bark in dark brown to almost black tones, with a deep reddish-brown heartwood and distinctly lighter sapwood, creating strong visual contrast. The texture is coarse, the grain is generally straight or slightly interlocked, and once machined, the surface feels extremely solid and dense.

Physical properties:
Azobe is among the heaviest and hardest commercial timbers, with an air-dry density of approximately 0.9–1.15 g/cm³. It has exceptional natural durability, offering outstanding resistance to termites, insects, fungal decay and moisture, and performs reliably under harsh weather conditions and in direct contact with water. This makes Azobe particularly suitable for heavy structural, outdoor and marine applications.
Due to its extreme hardness, however, Azobe is relatively difficult to machine and requires specialized, sharp tooling and proper techniques to avoid chipping, burning or rapid tool wear.

2. Main applications

Thanks to its superior mechanical performance, Azobe is widely used in:

Heavy-duty and marine structures: ports, jetties, harbor works, piles and structural components in contact with or close to water.

Infrastructure: railway sleepers, beams, industrial flooring and other high-load structural elements.

Exterior works & landscaping: outdoor decking, steps, platforms, fences, garden structures, and outdoor benches and tables.

With its exceptionally long service life and low maintenance requirements, Azobe is often the preferred choice for projects that demand maximum durability, structural safety and minimized lifecycle maintenance costs.
