Product description

Iroko Timber – A Sustainable Outdoor Timber Solution from Africa – Thanh Lam Wood

Origin:
Iroko is a natural African hardwood, found mainly in Congo, Nigeria, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). On the market, Iroko is commonly supplied as square-edged boards, either air dried or kiln dried, to meet export standards.

1. Wood characteristics

Freshly sawn Iroko heartwood has a yellow tone, which gradually deepens to a warm copper-brown over time, creating a rich and elegant appearance. This natural color change enhances the “mature wood” look of Iroko in use, making it ideal for designs that emphasize authenticity and the aged beauty of timber.

Iroko has very high natural durability and withstands outdoor weather extremely well, with low risk of decay, so it is considered a cost-effective alternative to more expensive outdoor hardwoods. The wood tends to splinter and chip at the edges and can quickly dull cutting tools if they are not sharp enough, so proper tooling, speed and technique are required during machining to avoid cracking and edge damage.

2. Main applications

Thanks to its mechanical properties and excellent outdoor durability, Iroko is used in a wide range of applications:

Exterior structures and finishes: doors, frames, sun-screens, and exterior detailing.

Flooring & cladding: interior flooring, outdoor decking, truck and container flooring.

Shipbuilding & marine works: decking boards, planking and components not in direct contact with soil or water.

High-end furniture & cabinetry: tables, chairs, cabinets, kitchen cabinets and other interior elements requiring durability and attractive color.

Veneer & decorative panelling: face and backing veneer for plywood, wall and ceiling panels, decorative partitions, handrails and stair components.

Joinery & crafted items: turned goods, light joinery, laminated elements and technical wood components.

One notable advantage is that Iroko used outdoors does not require frequent maintenance with oil or varnish to remain stable and durable. This is why Iroko is highly favored for exterior works and projects that demand long service life with minimal upkeep.
