Mukulugu Round Logs
Mukulugu Round Logs (often written as Mukulungu) is a natural African hardwood with a reddish-brown color, fine texture, straight to slightly interlocked grain, and high density (around 0.94 g/cm³ at 8–12% moisture content). Origin
Mukulugu round logs are a natural hardwood sourced from the tropical rainforests of Central and West Africa, with high concentration in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and some neighboring countries. On the market, Mukulugu is traded mainly as round logs and sawn timber, serving furniture manufacturing, flooring and other high–grade wood applications.
1. Wood characteristics
Appearance & Color
In round–log form, Mukulugu typically features:
Bark: Grey–brown to dark yellow–brown, relatively thick, providing good protection for the heartwood during harvesting and transport.
Heartwood: A characteristic warm golden–brown tone that becomes more even and deeper over time, giving a mature, elegant appearance.
Sapwood: Lighter in color, with a relatively narrow band that clearly contrasts with the heartwood.
Grain: Generally straight and fine, with a fairly dense texture. After sawing, planing and finishing, the surface feels smooth and flat, suitable for applications that demand refined aesthetics.

Physical & Mechanical Properties
Mukulugu is a hard, relatively high–density hardwood with:
Strength & load–bearing capacity: Good hardness and strength, suitable for medium to heavy–duty applications such as flooring, stair treads, risers and structural interior components.
Dimensional stability: When properly dried and treated, the wood shows low levels of warping and shrinkage, maintaining its shape well over long–term use.
Biological durability: Good resistance to insects and fungi, especially in interior conditions or sheltered exterior applications.
Workability: Thanks to its relatively fine and compact grain, Mukulugu is fairly easy to machine (sawing, planing, turning, milling, sanding). Finished surfaces look clean and smooth, with good adhesion to oils, stains and coatings.
