Padouk Round Logs – Premium, Sustainable Red Hardwood from Africa – Thanh Lam Wood
Origin: Padouk is a natural African hardwood, mainly distributed in Congo, Nigeria, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). On the market, Padouk is commonly supplied as sawn timber, veneer, flooring and blanks for interior and handicraft production in line with export standards.
1. Wood characteristics
African Padouk (Pterocarpus soyauxii), also known as African Redwood, stands out with a heartwood color ranging from light pinkish orange to deep reddish brown. Over time, it gradually darkens into a deeper red-brown tone, adding depth and luxury to finished surfaces. The sapwood is lighter in color, creating a natural contrast that fits perfectly with high–end interior and decorative designs.
In terms of physical properties, Padouk is a moderately heavy, hard and dense wood with very high dimensional stability, showing minimal warping or movement when properly kiln–dried and treated. It belongs to the durable to very durable group, with excellent resistance to decay, fungi, termites and other insects, making it suitable for both interior applications and demanding use conditions.
Padouk is also considered easy to work with: it can be sawn, planed, turned, sanded, molded, edge–glued and sliced into veneer using the right tooling. After finishing with oil, stain or varnish, its grain and color come out beautifully, creating a strong visual impact and clearly highlighting the “premium hardwood” character of the product.
2. Main applications
Thanks to its impressive color, strong mechanical properties and high stability, Padouk is widely used in:
High–end interior furniture: tables, chairs, cabinets, shelves, tabletops and feature interior elements where aesthetics are a priority.
Flooring & staircases: indoor flooring, stair treads and handrails that require durability and a striking appearance.
Veneer & decorative paneling: face/back veneers for plywood, wall and ceiling cladding, decorative panels and premium interior finishes.
Fine woodworking & technical components: turned items, wooden boxes, decorative accessories, tool handles and components that require both hardness and high durability.
Musical instruments & special pieces: selected parts of musical instruments and “signature” wood products that demand a distinctive color and character.
With its unique reddish–orange tone, outstanding durability and excellent finishing qualities, Padouk is an ideal choice for high–end projects, interiors and decorative applications where aesthetics, longevity and distinctive value are equally important.
